Oslo:

A cargo ship loaded with Norwegian weapons destined to guard a Polish logistics hub that distributes navy help to Ukraine has run aground off Norway’s coast, authorities mentioned Friday.

The civilian vessel Finlandia Seaways was transporting among the weapons Oslo introduced Monday to guard the hub when it ran aground off southwestern Norway on Thursday.

“The vessel hit a shoal and suffered harm to the rudder and propeller. It needed to be tugged to a dock,” a spokesman for the Sola rescue centre, Thomas Breivoll, instructed AFP.

“There was nothing dramatic about it,” he added.

Norway’s defence ministry is sending F-35 jet fighters, NASAMS surface-to-air missiles and round 100 troopers to guard the Rzeszow hub in Poland as a part of a NATO member state rotation.

A big a part of Western navy help to Ukraine, which has been heading off Russia’s invasion since 2022, transits by the logistical hub in southeastern Poland.

In keeping with Hanne Olafsen, a spokeswoman for the Norwegian armed forces, the ship was transporting “parts of the anti-air materiel destined for Poland”.

“It will undoubtedly result in a slight delay” within the contingent’s deployment, she instructed AFP.

The navy gear will likely be transferred from the Finlandia Seaways to a different vessel, and the world across the ship has been secured.
