Taipei:

Taipei stated Wednesday it had detected a Chinese language plane service group crusing in direction of waters separating Taiwan and China, a day after Beijing held a live-fire train close to the self-ruled island.

China considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory and has ramped up army exercise across the island lately to strain Taipei into accepting its claims of sovereignty.

The Liaoning plane service group was noticed in a single day in waters close to the Taipei-administered Pratas Islands, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) southwest of Taiwan, and heading north in direction of the delicate Taiwan Strait.

Chinese language navy vessels “led by the plane service Liaoning, sailed via waters close to Dongsha (the Pratas Islands) and continued northward towards the Taiwan Strait,” Taiwan’s defence ministry stated in a press release on the social media platform X.

Taiwan’s army “monitored the scenario and responded accordingly”, the ministry stated.

The Liaoning took half in China’s large-scale army drills round Taiwan final week that have been condemned by Taipei and its key backer Washington.

China despatched a report variety of fighter jets in addition to warships to encircle Taiwan in what Beijing stated was a “stern warning to the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan Independence’ forces”.

That was adopted by an announcement that China would maintain a live-fire train on Tuesday in an space about 105 kilometres from Taiwan.

Over the weekend, a US and a Canadian warship handed via the 180-kilometre Taiwan Strait, a part of common passages by Washington and its allies meant to bolster its standing as a global waterway.

Beijing condemned the passage as disrupting “peace and stability” within the strait.
