Luxembourg:
The European Union’s international coverage chief Josep Borrell Monday denounced as “utterly unacceptable” a collection of Israeli assaults which have injured United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.
“The 27 (EU) members agreed on asking (the) Israelis to cease attacking UNIFIL,” Borrell informed reporters forward of a gathering of the bloc’s international ministers in Luxembourg. “It is utterly unacceptable attacking United Nations troops,” he mentioned.
No less than 5 peacekeepers have been wounded in current days as Israel targets Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL, a mission of about 9,500 troops of varied nationalities created following Israel’s 1978 invasion of Lebanon, has accused the Israeli army of “intentionally” firing on its positions.
“Many European members are taking part on this mission,” Borrell famous. “Their work is essential.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu known as on UN chief Antonio Guterres Sunday to maneuver peacekeepers deployed in south Lebanon out of “hurt’s means”, saying Hezbollah was utilizing them as “human shields”.
UNIFIL has refused to depart its positions.
