Boston left-hander James Paxton strained his proper calf after 5 pitches of his begin Sunday in opposition to the visiting Houston Astros, the Purple Sox introduced.
Paxton limped off the sphere after shifting to cowl first base on Yordan Alvarez’s grounder to first baseman Dominic Smith with two outs within the opening inning. Alvarez beat Smith to the bag for an infield single.
Boston supervisor Alex Cora and a coach visited Paxton, who limped to the dugout with the help of the coach. Proper-hander Lucas Sims changed Paxton.
Boston traded for Paxton, who performed for the Purple Sox in 2023, on July 26 in alternate for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar. Total, he’s 9-3 with a 4.40 ERA in 21 begins this season.
Paxton, 35, is a profession 73-41 with a 3.77 ERA in 177 begins for the Seattle Mariners (2013-18, 2021), New York Yankees (2019-20), Purple Sox (2023, 2024) and Dodgers.
